Circus arts' heritage
Through several initiatives, the Circuscentrum attempts to protect, promote and re-establish the circus arts' heritage in Flanders. To this end, Marie Vandecaveye has joined our team in 2010 as part-time co-worker.
Documentation centre
Since 2001, the Circuscentrum (through Circusvlo) is building a documentation centre consisting of hundreds of books, files, reference books, DVDs, comics, posters and magazines on circus arts. It is an excellent source to help you with your thesis or simply to show off your knowledge to friends and family.

Online database
In cooperation with the Circuscentrum, SAIL (Street Arts Information Library) developed the Database for Circus and Arts in the Public Space. From now on, you can consult the online database to see what items are available in our and MiramirO's documentation centres, where the publications themselves are available.

Heritage in CircusMagazine
The regular and valuable contributions by André De Poorter to CircusMagazine each time focus on another specific angle of the circus arts' past in Belgium: publicity circuses, singers and celebrities in the circus arts, magicians, artists' names, 'strongwomen', fakirs, bascule in the previous century, the Gossing circus family, and many more.
CircusMagazine also leaves room for interviews with interesting characters such as Marc Jacobs, Sylvie Dhaene and Erik Vlaminck, and for announcements on the latest acquisitions of the documentation centre.

Immaterial circus arts' heritage
Immaterial heritage is simply all intangible heritage: oral traditions, rituals, social conventions and traditional skills. Famous examples are Aalst Carnaval (Carnival in Aalst), mounted shrimp fishing in Oostduinkerke, St Nicholas' and St Martin's days, dialects,...
Circus arts' heritage, too, is partly intangible: knowledge, traditional customs and techniques are remembered by old circus artists. Therefore, the Circuscentrum gives priority to restore those 'Living human treasures' and to protect their stories and experiences as good as possible.
An example: during the Ghent Festivities 2010, the Circuscentrum and the Huis van Alijn took three renowned circus artists to the stage with Les Poupées Passionnées. Roger Novaro (88), Jean Gebruers (71) and Bill Kartoum (82) showed hundreds of spectators the strength of their characters and the wealth of their past. For the next project, the Circuscentrum will try to record the stories of those old circus artists and others, and distribute them.

Old circus posters
The Circuscentrum has collected twenty beautiful Belgian circus posters dated in the first half of the 20th century. They are reproductions from original lithographs from the collections of André De Poorter and the Huis van Alijn.
